User reviews
This drive was purchased to replace a 3TB that was full and time to retire. I was going to replace it with a 6TB drive, but while searching, I ran across the 8TB Seagate. I have researched the drive specs online and was impressed with the all around evals. I placed the drive into the JBOD and started a data transfer from the 3TB to the 8TB driving using FastCopy with a 30720MB buffer using the CRC option. I did not recorded the time it took to transfer the files, but the job was done after hours where the servers and systems were not taxed. The only event that was occurring were the transfers of the files. That was about 2 weeks ago. Since the installation, the HDD has performed exceptionally well. I am impressed. There are other drives that will be replacing soon and sure enough this drive is the one I plan to get to replace the older drives. BTW, the seller takes great care in shipping the hard drives. The drive that we received was packaged with a thick rubber foam that had cutouts to fit the drive with a nice firm grip. The shipping box was tapped securely. We acknowledge that drive does not come in a store bought factory shipping package, that that makes no difference to us. What matters is the drive. Will it do the job. Will it deliver that is it expected. We believe it does. As mentioned, we are planning on purchasing additional drives to support the NAS.
It's good storage if you don't need or can afford a NAS drive. I'm currently using 3 of these ST8000DM004 drives on one of my pc's. So far they have been reliable. I regularly transfer a lot of files between pc's or even between drives. I keep the defrag in Windows 10 set to work daily and it helps keep transfer speeds up to a decent level. It's not quite as fast as some NAS drives I've had but it performs decently enough for me at this price point.
Seagate Barracuda's have been a top choice of mine for over 10 years. Never had one failed. The added software and USB interface are great for use when cloning OS drives when you don't have the Sata or power connections on board. You can also use the USB interface with Seagate's software as well.
