I purchased 2 sets of these shortly after they first became available. One set [3] for the outside of my house, another set [4] for a family member's business on the inside. I have both sets in use for 24hrs / day, every day. Overall, this has enabled me to see most of the PROS and CONS. Overall, I am pleased with both sets of cameras and the peace of mind is still worth the occasional minor inconvenience or glitch. For the set on the outside of my house, they work great. Excellent field of vision, nice video quality, ability to fine tune the specifics. The ONE issue for an outside application is the battery meter and the inaccuracy caused by cold weather. I've probably replaced the batteries more than I needed to. Getting on a ladder an unscrewing the cameras from their hard-mounts is not pleasant in the middle of Winter. For the set on the inside of the business, the same PROS apply. The major CON for this use is that the cameras are activated VERY often by the customers / members, so the cameras record a lot of videos...THUS, the battery usage is VERY high. We recently switched to a decent quality rechargeable battery, but they don't last even half as long as the disposable high performance batteries, so the ladder at the business gets a lot of use. **I think it would be very useful if Netgear created a high-performance rechargeable battery pack for these cameras, with the best possible specs from their designers / engineers. It would most likely eliminate both sets of cons for indoor / outdoor battery use and consumption.**
Installed the four camera system a few weeks ago. Install is quite easy. Had the system up and running pretty fast. Was able to live view the areas chosen with an 8 to 15 second delay. The system automatically records 10 second of footage per camera automatically. The problem here is that it catches a lot of things not wanted and a lot of nothing. This is a problem when push notifications are set. Way too many false video alerts. Was not able to review videos as easily as they should have been either, this was very frustrating. The app is free and figured I would go with the paid version to see if there would be any improvement. None. Cancelled after 5 days. A few more days later the system went down. Re started the base station to get all the cameras back online. That worked for a day or two before it went down again. After my third attempt I gave up and returned the system. Should have done my research as the reviews I read after the fact were horrible. Save your money, do some research and look at other systems.
So after waiting a while, I finally got an Arlo set of camera's and the Netgear base. Aside from the fact that I had to purchase rechargeable batteries separately, this is a great value. The unit comes with one time use Li-ion batteries that will probably last at least 5 months based on my current usage. The setup is simple. Connect Netgear base to router and then unpack and set up each camera independently. The app is easy and there are a number of configurations you can use to push notifications. Too many notifications can be addressed by scheduling on times or just having certain camera's set to notify. No matter what they are virtually dummy proofed as far as setup and installation. I used the magnet mounts because they are just one screw and give the user the most positional control. I definitely recommend these. Note: there are other Arlo devices that might have sound but this does not. It is perfect for my use.
